Delilah Ramirez Political Science 101 Civil Liberties/Civil Rights Issues November 19, 2014 I†¦My chosen topic is Gay Rights- more specifically marriage equality. Public opinion in the U.S. shows the majority support for the legal recognition of same-sex marriages. This issue is more likely to be supported by women and people under 50. My thesis is that marriage equality a civil right, rights we are born with as a citizen of the U.S. which the government cannot interfere with or suppress. (Lecture Notes 8/27). Over the past decade, marriage equality has become an even larger and more controversial issue. The issue of same-sex marriage equality is being supported today in 33 states by the means of laws, court cases and social changes in our society. In the 1990s several California lawyer’s organizations supported a proposed bill to permit same-sex marriage. In 1996, President Bill Clinton signed into law the Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as being strictly between a man and a woman, and expresses that states do not have to recognize same-sex marriages that occur in other states. My Career With My College Career Essay - 1558 Words

Starting at a young age I always had an interest in helping people in some shape or form. A true interest in the social service field did not come along, though, until middle of my college career with the help of my current profession in foster care. Connecting with people of different education levels throughout school to either help them understand the lecture material or to work with them to problem solve the lecture material together always came easy to me. It was then I knew I have an apt for connecting to people on different levels. My interests changed throughout my college career. Once enrolled in college, I believed I had an interest in Pre-Med with a specialization in Pediatrics. With my love for Math, Science, and children, I had assumed that becoming a Pediatrician would be the right field for me. After taking more classes and discussing future career goals with my peers and counselors, I knew it was not for me. Once I enrolled at Northern Illinois University, I declared my major as Psychology. Up until then, I had only take two or three classes in the field and did have an interest for it.
